 THE FELDENKRAIS METHOD

The Feldenkrais Method has been described as a highly effective system of exercise and health improvement. Without effort or strain you can enhance your flexibility, ease of movement, relaxation and posture usually beyond that which is possible with conventional exercise. Results are often quick and long lasting bringing relief from chronic pain, tension, stress and discomfort.

Many conditions can be helped by this method. Some of the more commonly treated include:

  • injuries
  • aches and  pains
  • poor posture (the cause of many health complaints)
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • MS
  • Stroke

It can also help to maximize your potential in exercise and sports, through better strength, flexibility and awareness.

These exercises communicate directly with your brain - the control centre of your body. Feldenkrais works on the theory that it is your brain and nervous system, not your muscles which determine the health of your posture, the ease and comfort of your movement and the extent of your flexibility.  These special exercises are carefully designed to help your nervous system form new neuromuscular pathways, creating improved body usage, health and vitality.

Learning this method will help you to become your own authority on your body, making you better able to make the right choices for yourself through developing greater awareness rather than relying solely on professional instruction and advice.

What happens in a session?
Sessions last around an hour and are carried out on a yoga mat at on the floor. It is advisable to wear loose comfortable clothing. You will be instructed through a series of exercises that are suitable for your particular problem.

In addition to the exercises, a non-invasive gentle touch similar to massage is also incorporated into a session. This is designed to maximise the benefits gained from the exercises.

Dan is also able to enhance sessions by including his knowledge of the body and movement from his long background in teaching yoga and pilates.

Is it safe?
This method is totally safe and is modified to suit each individual. For example, if your mobility is restricted by pain, injury or physical limitation, by making each movement extremely small and slow the benefits are still gained and the body is protected. In fact such sensory motor exercises are ideal for helping the body to heal and repair itself.

How many sessions will I need?
This can vary from person to person depending on the issue to be resolved and how deep into the process a client wishes to go. One session is often enough for a certain problem. However at least 5 sessions are normally recommended to get a good understanding of the techniques involved. Some clients decide to have ongoing treatment on an irregular basis for as long as 10 years and some clients feel they gain enough from 1 or 2 sessions.

What people have said about the Feldenkrais Method:
“The exercises are so ingenious and simple” - Yehudi Menuhin, Concert violinist

“Feldenkrais has remarkable success in a wide range of complaints ranging from the debilitating to the merely nagging” - Science Digest

“Feldenkrais method will be of great benefit to all humanity. From my own experience I know the remarkable results achieved.” - David Ben-Gurion, First Prime Minister of Israel.
