HYPNOTHERAPY
What is hypnosis?
The actual experience of being hypnotised is very difficult to describe, neither asleep nor awake. It is similar to daydreaming or to the state we all pass through at night, just before we drop off to sleep. All hypnotic states are characterised by a tremendously pleasant state of relaxation, an altered state of consciousness into which individuals allow themselves to enter so that desired, beneficial suggestions may be given directly to the unconscious mind. Thus, hypnosis is a natural, effective way of making contact with the inner (unconscious) self, a source of many of our problems as well as a tremendous reservoir of unrecognised potential strength and knowledge. Nobody can ever be hypnotised against their will and, even when hypnotised, people can still reject any of the suggestions given if they are not appropriate. Clinical hypnosis is an alliance between client and therapist and as such, the client remains in control at all times. Hypnotherapy means the use of hypnosis for the treatment and relief of a variety of somatic and psychological symptoms.
Who has hypnotherapy?
The most common reasons for visiting a Hypnotherapist are for weight control and stopping smoking, but it doesn't end there. Hypnotherapy is medically accepted as a practical treatment for:
- Breaking unwanted habits (e.g. nail biting, stuttering). Hypnosis can free the individual from phobias, compulsions, panic attacks, tension headaches, sleeping problems, inhibitions, guilty feelings, jealousy, stress and anxiety.
- Increasing work/study/sporting performance (presentation nerves, study problems, lack of motivation etc). Overcoming test anxiety (driving tests, exams). Improving concentration and memory, developing the imagination and creativity, boosting self-confidence, and achieving more of the potential which we each possess.
- Self-Hypnosis is taught which provides a coping mechanism to help prevent stress and tension caused by modern day living.
How often will I need treatment?
This depends on what is being treated. As a general rule, more life-long problems will take a few sessions more to resolve. Hypnotherapy is a short-term therapy, and as such duration ranges from between one to six sessions. Sessions are usually on a weekly basis, for one hour. For stop smoking sessions, normally one session is all that is required. For peace of mind, a booster session is provided free of charge within 3 months of the first appointment.
Is it safe?
Hypnotherapy is completely natural and safe and there are no harmful side effects. You can expect to leave the session calm, relaxed and feeling confident. When administered by a professionally trained and skilled Hypnotherapist the benefits are long lasting and often permanent.
