NUTRITITONAL THERAPY
Nutritional therapy is a complementary therapy, which means that it works alongside orthodox medicine. It encompasses individual prescriptions for diet and lifestyle in order to alleviate or prevent ailments and to encourage the body’s natural healing. A Nutritional Therapist will recommend dietary and lifestyle changes including where appropriate, functional tests and nutritional supplements.
Why see a Nutritional Therapist?
It may be because of a health condition which other therapies have not been able to help with. It may be to have a better understanding of your body and how it works. Or it may simply be to have a better understanding of healthy eating. Whatever the reason, Nutritional Therapy is about educating the client and empowering them to take responsibility for their own health.
What sort of health conditions can Nutritional Therapy help?
These are some of the areas in which Nutritional Therapy can be particularly helpful:
- Skin disorders
- Hormonal imbalance
- Food sensitivities
- Weight issues
- Stress
- Digestive disorders
- Fatigue
- Mental health problems
- Cardiovascular health
- Musculoskeletal problems
- Fertility and pre-conceptual care
What does a consultation involve?
Consultations are one-to-one between the client and the Therapist and fully confidential. Prior to the initial consultation, the client is asked to complete a comprehensive questionnaire, giving a thorough background to the client’s health history. This includes a section on family history and a food diary which needs to be filled in for several days. During a first consultation the Nutritional Therapist will go through your questionnaire with you, gather any extra information, explain how your diet may be contributing to your conditions, and make recommendations to your current diet and lifestyle in order to optimise your health. A holistic examination of various body systems (eg. cardiovascular, immunity, toxicity etc.) and their effects on any current health problems will be explored. Following a consultation, a client will receive:
- a summary report of the consultation, highlighting the dietary and lifestyle changes that need to be implemented
- a supplement programme, if appropriate
- fact sheets and diagrams to support any explanations of client’s conditions
- information about any functional tests which clients may need to carry out
What works for one person may not work for another and for this reason, a Nutritional Therapist treats everyone as an individual, designing a personalised programme based on the individuals’ needs. Follow-up consultations are usually advised so that progress can be assessed and any adjustments made to the client’s programme.
