YOGA

You don’t have to be young and bendy to ‘do’ yoga!

Many people can feel intimidated at the idea of joining a yoga class since it is often advertised by incredibly flexible, slim, youthful people. This is not a prerequisite to practising yoga, but may be a result of practising it!

The term yoga comes from the Sanskrit word ‘yug’ meaning ‘union’ or ‘to join’. In practising yoga we are aiming to join our body, breath and mind in our activities. This is what makes it more than just an exercise regime. In fact there is a lot more to yoga than the postures, which are called asanas, which are commonly portrayed.

The ultimate aim of the various practises in yoga is to prepare the body and mind for meditation by freeing them of tension and illness. So as a product of our practise we become more flexible, stronger, calmer and healthier. Our posture improves and we are more able to cope with life’s ups and downs.

The classes at Belsize Health are tailored to develop each person’s abilities in a safe, structured practise.  Focused elements include breathing well and moving with the breath; correct alignment; increasing flexibility, strength and stamina (of body and mind!). You will also be introduced to some yoga philosophy to better understand your practise.

“When all the senses are stilled, when the mind is at rest, when the intellect wavers not - that say the wise, is the highest state. This calm of the senses and the mind has been defined as yoga.” Katha Upanishad c.800BC
