Acupuncture for Fertility - Acupuncture Awareness Week

Acupuncture for Fertility - Acupuncture Awareness Week

Around one in seven couples may have difficulty conceiving, this is approximately 3.5 million people in the UK . With the number of couples seeking medical help to have a family on the rise, more and more people are now turning to acupuncture to help.

As part of Acupuncture Awareness Week (7th to 13th March), our expert practitioner, Lora Macfarlane, specialising in acupuncture for fertility shares her thoughts on the subject and answers some common questions.

Acupuncture is a popular chosen fertility therapy to support both natural conception and assisted conception/IVF.  When trying to conceive couples are often faced with conflicting advice within the arena of fertility medicine and it can be confusing as to how best to support the process other than a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Acupuncture is an ideal therapy to support natural conception and during the IVF process to increase success rates of treatment, providing general support throughout what is often a very challenging process. According to a study published in the British Medical Journal in 2008, acupuncture can increase the chances of getting pregnant for women undergoing fertility treatment by 65%.

Acupuncture is a safe effective treatment through IVF, IUI and donor egg cycles and the treatment itself is often deeply relaxing. Research suggests acupuncture can aid fertility through the following mechanisms:

  • Regulating fertility hormones
  • Increasing ovarian arterial blood flow, improving ovarian function
  • Increasing blood flow to the uterus
  • Helping to balance hormones in cases of PCO and PCOS

We believe in empowering patients to enable them to make informed choices and achieve results quickly.  We work in an integrated way incorporating western diagnostic procedures in our approach, with over 12 years experience specialising in fertility acupuncture we provide a knowledgeable base from which to embark on any fertility journey.

After an early miscarriage and months of trying to conceive a friend recommended acupuncture and Lora. Within minutes of meeting Lora I felt calmed and knew that I was in the right place. Acupuncture helped me to get pregnant and kept me calm throughout. Each session allowed me to connect with my growing baby and took any stress of working and living in London away. I gave birth to a health baby boy, was able to breastfeed and entered motherhood in a great frame of mind. I will 100% have acupuncture with Lora throughout my next pregnancy and would recommend it to anyone thinking of trying it!”
